Coffin apartments in Hong Kong

Image
Wong Tat-ming, 63, sits in his “coffin home” that costs him HK$2,400 ($310) a month. (AP Photo/Kin Cheung) While some of us are getting richer everyday, there are people who are going the opposite direction, they are getting poorer by the day. China is an example of such problem. Many people whine about having small homes or having no cars, the poorest community in Hong Kong lives in 15 square foot rooms made out of wooden planks or mesh wires. These tiny cubicles are created inside a 400 sq ft flat where each “apartment” has at least enough space to fit a bed in it, vertically that is, exactly like a coffin. And, just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, the kitchen and toilets are somehow stuffed in the same cubicle. PTCL and DJuice witty jibes at each other on twitter

Image
Amid the frustrating situation when the internet in Pakistan was down due to undersea cable damage, DJuice and PTCL had an interesting exchange on twitter. Since mainly PTCL was affected by the cable damage, DJuice, a mobile phone plan from Telenor, jibed at PTCL and asked it to subscribe to its 1500mb plan to get connected to the internet and live stream its cable repair process to its customers. Interestingly PTCl official handle replied to the DJuice tweet saying, “Thank you for the offer but we like sticking with the packages that don’t run out. #Unlimited” This started a back and forth process of witty replies to each other by both DJuice and PTCL.  PTCL’s main focus was their unlimited plans while DJuice believed it was more important to remain connected than having an unlimited but temperamental internet plan. Twitteratis thoroughly enjoyed the interesting jibes of both PTCL and DJuice. Most importantly, the encounter remained witty and civil. Both deserve applause.

Is Snapchat Sexist?

Image
While around 70% of Snapchat users might be women, many blame the famous messaging app for being sexist due to its heavy focus on filters that promote a specific version of female beauty. Their filters create a false and unnatural image of beauty that could only be achieved through those filters. Many young girls cope to reconcile with reality outside the pretty world of Snapchat filters because they get conditioned with a false concept of beauty. The world of Snapchat is full of pretty filters with all the ruffles, glitter, anime eyes, head gears and make up. It completely changes one’s facial outlook. Psychologists believe such sexist filters can result in depression and lack of confidence among women, especially young girls, and they’ll struggle to face people in real world. They’ll want to project a Snapchat-like filtered image of themselves, and failing to do so will cause them anxiety and depression. Such pressure to conform to a certain definition of “beautiful” can have dra...

Moroccan female singer glorifies domestic violence through her song

Image
Imane Bent el-Howat, a Moroccan folk singer, sparked an outrage due to her recently released song which urges women to enjoy being beaten by their husbands. Domestic violence is a norm in Morocco. A recent survey put the rate of domestic violence as high as 63%. However, Imane’s new track, dubbed ‘al-Banat Kamouniyat’ (The Battered Woman) claims women enjoy being beaten by their husbands. The song have verses that translate to “a slap fixes the mood” and “they say beating comes from paradise, the one who tastes it, gets peace”. In an interview, the musician explained how “if she tasted his beating she won’t forget his love” and that “he won’t let anyone else beat me and it [beating] is a show of jealousy which means love”. Imane’s flawed concept can be blamed on the fact that domestic violence is pretty common in Morocco and every tenth the women have been its target at least once. She further argues in the interview about how mothers usually teach their daughters that if a man truly l...
