This is what we call fate. It seems like we are born free to choose, but it’s not like that it’s your fate that makes you do what you do. You are reading this article because it is in your fate and if you stop reading it, it’s still written in your fate not to read it any further. Fate, I believe, is an important force ...

CPEC and The Importance of Maritime Security

Image
The sea routes have always been a major source of global economic activity conjoined with the political interests of the states. They have remained integral in the quest for power and also play an essential role in maintaining the power equilibrium among the contending states. This is why the countries which are landlocked are considered to be less fortunate and handicapped in terms of pursuing their economic and political interests as compared to the littoral ones. However, in order to fully utilize the maritime advantages, it is essential that an effective policy focusing on the security and safety of the sea lanes and water bodies; including both the domestic and international waters is devised and streamlined on the regular basis. Gwadar port promises to offer huge dividends not just to Pakistan and China but has the potential to bring about benefits beyond the immediate region. Hence the maritime security is an important yet less attended area that demands serious attention by the...

Joint-Sea 2016: Sino – Russia axis towards a global ascendancy

Image
In the contemporary international arena, regional alliance is significant; and for great powers like China and Russia to have regional popularity and cordial relations with all the regional countries is in their fundamental interests. Last week, China and Russia commenced an eight-day joint naval exercise in the South China Sea off the coast of China’s Guangdong province, in a sign of growing cooperation between their armed forces against the backdrop of regional territorial disputes. The “Joint Sea-2016” included ships, submarines, ship-borne helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, along with marines and amphibious armored vehicles which carried out live-firing exercises. The Naval exercises concluded on September 19. Interestingly this exercise is the first major drill of its kind involving China and a regional power Russia in the South China Sea. So Beijing and Moscow held the first-ever South China Sea iteration of their Joint Sea exercises. The Chinese and Russian navies appointed in...

Pak-Russia Joint Military Exercises: Possibility for an Emerging New Alliance?

Image
Since the landscape of International politics is always changing, where the alliances and partnerships are also shifting with much frequency, a new emerging cooperation between Pakistan and Russia gains a huge attention as well as importance. Not only is this a significant development in itself where these two estranged states, since the Cold War, have now agreed to joined hands in military domain, but the timing of the military exercises is also quite noteworthy. It is the time when India, a long time trusted ally of Russia, is bent upon isolating Pakistan in the international community. Hence Russian tilt towards Pakistan despite India’s motives and concerns, carry immense implications for the states as well as for the regional political and strategic dynamics. At the same time India has always banked upon Russia’s unconditional support in almost all the regional and global matters vis a vis Pakistan and other states. Hence the prevalent concern in the official circles of New Delhi a...

FATA TDPs Continue to Return Back to their Areas Amid Various Difficulties

Image
The fallout of operation Zarb-e-Azb saw a large number of people being displaced from various agencies of FATA taking refuge in camps and other areas of the country. Over 300,000 families were displaced from their areas as a result of the operation. 190,000 families have returned to their areas so far. Those still languishing in camps and other places face enormous difficulties. A sizable number of families however went to Afghanistan. Government of Pakistan launched a registration drive to repatriate such families in a dignified way. Around 24,000 NADRA verified families were repatriated as a result. However, there are still many left in the neighboring country who couldn’t register themselves for one reason or the other even though the registration process was open for around 8 months . According to government policy such unregistered TDPs (temporary displaced persons) are not entitled to receive the transport and return cash grants which are 10,000 and 25,000 PKR respectively. The t...

Marshall Island pursued a lawsuit against the main player U.S. who carried out 67 nuclear tests in the Marshall Islands between 1946 and 1958. The Marshall Islands is appealing to the US Supreme Court after its case against the country was dismissed by a US federal court last year. U.S. nuclear testing in the Marshall Islands has deeply affected the country’s sensitivity toward the issue of nuclear weapons. Marshall Island nuclear disarmament case against India, Pakistan, and the United Kingdom, was dismissed by United Nations Highest court earlier this month. A bench of 16-judge at the international court of justice (ICJ) ruled there was no proof that the islands’ administration had a previous conflict with any of above ment...
